CONTEXT (Contexte): Mini-lecture on the French Medieval author, Chrétien de Troyes
Students access the video below using the platform PlayPosit, integrated into the Canvas site. The video pauses at intervals, and students must answer questions (listed after the video) before continuing to watch the mini-lecture.
Question 1 (3 minutes 30 seconds)
- How is the medieval romance different than the genre of the “lai”?
- Comment est-ce que le roman médiéval est différent du lai ?
Question 2 (3 minutes 31 seconds):
- What does “rime plate” mean? A: Two consecutive lines rhyme. B: A rhyme repeats for an entire stanza. C: Rhymes alternate.
- “La rime plate” veut dire quoi ? A: Deux rimes consécutives se riment. B: Une rime se répète pendant une strophe entière. C: Les rimes sont intercalées (ABAB).
Question 3 (5 minutes 25 seconds):

READING (Lecture ): Excerpt from Le Chevalier de la Charrette
Students access the reading using the social annotation platform Perusall. Here is a screenshot showing a few marginal annotations, some of which I added to help students understand difficult parts of the reading. Students have also annotated the reading with unfamiliar vocabulary words.

COMPREHENSION (Compréhension):
Students then complete a comprehension activity. For this assignment, they consult a Google Doc (also embedded below) in which I have outlined the sequence of events encountered in this excerpt of the text. In the first section of that outline, each student adds a quote from the reading that exemplifies one of the summaries of a small part of the text. In the second section, each student adds in detail to fill out a sparser outline.
